Bamboo Earrings: Still Fresh

Heavy gold jewelry became popular in the 1980s amongst rappers, male and female. Let us start with the female emcees...shall we?

LL Cool J said it best in his song 'Around The Way Girl':

I want a girl with extensions in her hair
Bamboo earrings
At least two pair

This is what was, as we say, 'hot in the streets', at the time. Bamboo earrings were also referred to as door knocker earrings, due to their size. They were not actually made of bamboo but they had a bamboo design. They came in many different shapes (triangle, square and circle) and some pairs came with a nameplate in each earring. This fashion staple was popularized by:

Roxanne Shante

Salt-N-Pepa 1987

MC Lyte

Other female emcees who wore this style below:

Middle row: Millie Jackson, MC Peaches, and unidentified
Bottom row: unidentified, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, and Synquis

Of course, teenagers picked up this style and began to wear it to school. The style was even banned from a school in Manhattan. Read the story here

I am not exactly sure why these went out of style but I guess most fashions come to an end. But that does not mean that it cannot be resurrected (if you don't mind me using that term), as many celebrities can be seen wearing them, such as:

Alicia Keys

Lily Allen

Rasheeda

Rihanna

Teyana Taylor

I have always loved the bamboo earrings. Do you think they should have been resurrected or left buried? Let us know what you think...

In the meantime, here's LL Cool J's video for 'Round The Way Girl'. Enjoy!
