Let's take it back to 1992, when in the midst of the gangsta rap movement, a group called Arrested Development, hit the radio waves heavy with this song. They called them afrocentric, alternative hip hop artists. Arrested Development came out when my parents started letting me buy my own music. I still have the cassette tape somewhere around here.
