Wind-It-Back Wednesday - Heavy D

Yesterday we learned of the tragic news. Dwight Arrington Myers, better known as Heavy D, passed away at the young age of 44. Grandmaster Flash delivered the initial news via twitter.

Grandmaster Flash
I was just told Heavy D passed away

Just the previous day Heavy D tweeted this which would be his last:

 HEAVY D

BE INSPIRED!
 HEAVY D

SMOKIN JOE FRAZIER..RIP.. truly one of the best heavyweight champs that ever lived.. GODS SPEED,MR FRAZIER!

No one saw it coming. Gone too soon. It wouldn't be right if we didn't honor his life on this edition of Wind-It-Back Wednesday. Treasure and support our hip hop pioneers while they are still living. You never know what tomorrow brings. So let's "be inspired!"

Heavy D and the Boyz came on the scene in 1987 with their debut album, Living Large.

I personally became familiar with him in 1989 when they released Big Tyme.

This was the jam back then! "We Got Our Own Thang"

Their next album was a tribute to the death of their group member, Trouble T Roy at the young age of  22. Peaceful Journey included production from Pete Rock, Marley Marl and more.

It included "Now That We Found Love":

And "Is It Good To You"

In 1992, Heavy D was featured in one of my favorite videos by the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson, which also featured another great, Michael Jordan. This video still gets me pumped:

Blue Funk was released in 1993 and featured "Truthful"

Nuttin But Love debuted in 1994 and may have been the groups most popular release:

Waterbed Hev was Heavy D's first solo release in 1997 and featured "Big Daddy":

Heavy was Heavy D's second solo album and debuted in 1999. The album featured Q-Tip, Cee-Lo, Big Pun and Eightball.

Heavy D also released and album in 2008 called Vibes, which was a reggae album paying homeage to his Jamaican roots.

Luckily for us, Heavy D. performed live at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards. It would be his last live television performance:

Rest in peace Heavy D. You really did your thing for hip hop and you will be missed!

Another song and video from Heavy D and The Boyz that I liked when I was younger was "Somebody for Me"

And one of my favorite songs of all times featuring Heavy D - "Candy Rain"

Heavy D was an inspiration and trailblazer in our lives.  Even though he is no longer with us in the physical sense, his inspiring message to us lives on, and Heavy D said it best,  "Once you're hiphop you're hiphop, it's in my blood it's not going anywhere"
