New York's P.S. 22 Covers Hip Hop
For all those parents who think that Hip Hop music is not for kids. Think again! The chorus from P.S. 22 were the center of attention at last night's Academy Awards. Read more via xxlmag.com:
Last night (February 27) during the 83rd annual Academy Awards the world was officially introduced to kids of the P.S. 22 Chorus from Staten Island, N.Y. Still, these youngsters are no strangers to fame. After all, they can count Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Common and Queen Latifah as fans. And, with YouTube videos of their performances pulling in around 28 million views, these fifth graders are bonafide Web superstars. With guidance from their chorus teacher, Gregg Breinberg, a.k.a Mr. B, P.S. 22 has covered a range of music from Lady Gaga to Katy Perry.
Below are some videos that XXL found. Enjoy!

Femcee Friday-Lady Luck
New Jersey born female emcee Lady Luck has been in the rap game since the late 90s but started writing and rhyming way before then. She uses her lyricism and not her sex appeal to get her point across. Her delivery is hard yet soft at the same time. Here is her biography from ejams.com:
Lady Luck's life is the perfect metaphor for hip-hop. Having signed a record deal at a young age, getting side tracked and finding her path once again, she has experienced both the successes and struggles of life and emerged victorious. From fierce battles that boast her prowess to thoughtfully conveying her deepest sentiments, she is already finding renewed success in the rap game, expressing an honest glimpse into the experience of being a young woman in present day. Using her music as a vehicle to represent her life, she flips her flow back and forth, fast and slow, punchy and smooth, effortlessly riding the beat and creating a diverse and unique sound.
Born in 1981, Lady Luck was closely linked to the music business growing up. Her mother was instrumental in breaking the first hip-hop record "Rappers Delight" as a radio promoter with Sugar Hill Records and her stepfather was a rapper signed to the label. At 5 years old, she expressed an interest in rapping; her mother wrote a rhyme, which she memorized and performed for anyone who would stay long enough to watch. From that moment on, Lady Luck knew her calling.
Due to challenging personal circumstances, her family moved around often in New Jersey. She used her music to anchor her to each location, honing her performance skills in talent shows from grade 2 through high school. She won 1st place in a local talent show at age 13, despite being so nervous that she performed with her eyes closed and sunglasses on. This victory only fueled her desire to succeed.
Her family landed in Teaneck, NJ when she was 16 years old. She found a second home at the barbershop in her neighborhood, where she met and had the opportunity to perform for some of the most well-known rappers of the time, including Fat Joe, Lil' Cease and Lil' Kim. She had already recorded a demo and with their encouragement, her manager began shopping it to the major labels. However, no one seemed interested.
One day, while listening to Hot97, she decided to call in to their freestyle battle segment 'Check the Rhyme.' She won five consecutive rounds was invited to the station to perform live on-air. The response to her performance was overwhelming- fielding interest from Universal, Rocafella, Def Jam and Bad Boy, a bidding war seemed imminent. However, Def Jam cut off the other labels when they released a statement announcing her signing to the label, prior to her agreement. In turn, they showered her with gifts and offered a lucrative deal, convincing her to contract with them.
Originally, Def Jam tried to link Lady Luck with Eric Sermon's Def Squad, seeing that the crew was also from New Jersey, but their styles didn't mesh. She met her manager, Ellis, who also managed Redman, and signed with him, but due to obligations to his more established clients, she was not his priority. Having never been assigned an A&R at the label, Lady Luck was left to mold her raw talent on her own- image, marketing efforts and sound. Already struggling to make sense of the whirlwind her life had become, she was overwhelmed- one week rapping with her high school buddies in the cafeteria, the next in the studio with Jay Z.
Although Def Jam had put her own album on the backburner, Lady Luck recorded songs with Method Man, Redman, Missy Elliot, Lil' Mo and Coffee Brown, as well as guest appearances on a Pharaoh Monch remix, the Professional 2 soundtrack and two Funk master Flex mix tape albums. Def Jam, at a loss of how to reconcile her harder sound with the softer image of a woman, toned down her femininity, dressing her in baseball caps, baggy shirts and jerseys; Lady Luck had something sexier in mind. After three years of being pushed aside and feeling misunderstood by the label, she asked the company's president to release her from her contract.
Only 20 years old, Lady Luck decided to take a break from rapping and got her hands dirty in the streets. After all the years of making hard gangsta' rap, she finally began to believe that the stories were true. However, she never strayed to far from the music business and continued to write for a small production company. Around the same time, she met her future business partner, Mike Oils, and while he tried to keep her focused on harnessing her talent, she acquiesced to the streets. When the owners of the production company stiffed her on her payments, she handled matters a little more aggressively, taking some friends and showing up at their office. In turn, she got slapped with a slew of felony charges and was facing a possible 10 years in jail.
By an act of God, she did only three months on a three year plea bargain. She used the time in jail to get back on track and focused - the day she was released, she recorded her first mix tape. With her partner's help, the two sold 5,000 copies on the streets. In the next two years, she released an additional three, selling over 20,000 units on the streets, in clubs and small record stores.
However, her real re-introduction to the industry came in the form of Fight Klub, a series of exclusive, underground MC battles. Lady Luck battled Remy Martin twice, but despite a close count, was deemed to have lost. However, the disagreement surrounding the close count and her lyrical prowess were enough to create a new buzz on the streets. In turn, she released a new mix tape- "Lady Luck vs. Remy Martin: let the streets decide" and leveraged the on-going arguments to increase her growing fan base.
With her new company, Major Hustle, she is developing a suite of up and coming recording artists and producers and giving them the support and development that she didn't have available in her younger years. In addition, Lady Luck herself is strongly positioned for a return- having honed her skills and found her voice; she is the talk of the streets. Standing on the edge of a media blitz, between the massive circulation of her mix tapes and white label vinyl, the impending release of The Fight Klub DVD (prominently featuring her battle with Remy Martin), the launch of her websites and an unofficial club tour across the country, Lady Luck is optimistic about the future. "I love my life," she explains. "Every female rapper is a star, but Lady Luck is the sun- they won't shine in my presence."
She was also a member of the FEM (Females Earning Money) Movement alongside Lady of Rage, Babs (of Da Band) and Amil, which formed in 2008. Unfortunately, the project did not go very far. They released one mixtape but it did not get much play. This was just another feat that Lady Luck conquered. Here is a recent video of the intro for her new album Are We There Yet?:
And this is only the intro. I can only imagine how the rest of the album will be. No release date has been announced but we will keep you posted.

SMH NEWS!!
Foxy Brown gets kicked out of after party; Another idiot tats his face; Consequence calls out Pusha T; Lil Kim claims to have made a million off of her mixtape.

I’m not really sure what the deal is with Foxy Brown and her epic fails these days. First, she doesn’t show up to a Christmas Eve gig, then releases Christmas Massacre, which is not a good record by any means and now she had to be physically removed from a party.
Here’s the story:
Foxy Brown was supposed to perform at a fashion show after-party for international designer Indashio. Apparently, that did not go down due to the fact that she showed up a few minutes before the event ended. Not only that but Foxy was intoxicated and locked herself in one of the bathrooms and refused to come out. Security guards had to escort her out of the building.
Foxy has another version of the story:
“The story is a complete fabrication,” Foxy advised RadarOnline.com. “When I got to the club I was not intoxicated at all. That’s a lie. There was no intoxication, there was no drama, and I was never physically escorted out by security.”
The designer, Indashio himself did not seem bothered by Foxy’s appearance:
“I was so happy to see her,” said Indashio. “When Foxy came at the end, it was the perfect way to close the night. It was the best after-party I ever had.”
Wow…who made this story up because obviously she was not drunk according. I think the designer would have had some other choice words for Foxy if that had been the case.
Anyway, SMH at Foxy for showing up so late. I thought she was trying to get her career back not make it even worse. Also, SMH, at whoever made up this story about her being so drunk that she had to be taken off the premises. Do you have nothing better to do than to make things up? Get a life!

Rapper Yung LA, known for his hit ‘Ain’t I’, decided to get a pink duck tattooed on his face…
Here’s why he decided to get the tattoo:
“With the breakup and me not doing business with Grand Hustle anymore, it’s a lot of controversy in the streets,” LA said. “It’s just a new day for me. I’m trying to do what’s best for me and what’s best for my career.”
NEWS FLASH: What’s best for your career is not getting a pink duck tattooed on your face! What planet do you live on? Where is your manager or whoever is helping you make decisions? I need them as well as you to get it together. Who wants to look at a grown man with a pink duck on his face?! I surely don’t. SMH
Rapper Consequence accused Pusha T of plagiarizing on Pusha’s latest track called ‘My God.’ Pusha T, of course, denies any plagiarism saying, "I haven't taken anything from Consequence, or anybody else for that matter."
Consequence took time to explain where all this was coming from:
"I had a record called 'Last Supper' that Kanye [West] wanted me to get Pusha to do a verse on when 'everything was everything," Cons said. "So naturally I gave him my record, him being at the time my label mate. Not to mention, I've known Pusha longer than I've known Kanye, for the record."
The record was never released and has not been heard or touched for some time now.
"[My God's] beat is good, the first verse, cool. [I thought], 'He's doing his Pusha thing, word!' So we get through to the second verse and I hear 'It's the last supper for you niggas, just the picture repainted.' So I'm like, hold up, my record had went, 'Cudi got the kids, Cons got the streets, 'Ye got the globe, so we all going to eat/it's the last supper for you muthafuckas, I don't make a promise I can't keep.’"
"[My God's] beat is good, the first verse, cool. [I thought], 'He's doing his Pusha thing, word!' Soooo…this is all over the “It’s the last supper for you” line? In the words of RZA, “you know this sh-t is F#%KING RIDICULOUS!!!!” Cry me a river! Why would you get mad over that one line? Anybody could have come up with that line or heard it and used it. I can count so multiples rappers who have used other rappers’ lines. Who cares? It’s one line! I could see if it was an entire verse or an entire song but it’s just one line! There are so many other things you could be doing with your time. Like your job! Go make some music and leave other folks alone. Until you have legitimate concerns, you don’t need to make any more comments about it. SMH
Lil Kim released her latest mixtape, Black Friday, last week on Valentine’s Day. Instead of the mixtape being free, she decided to sell it via PayPal for $9.99. Towards the end of the day, Kim had claimed, via twitter, that she had already sold over 100,000 copies of the mixtape which means she would have grossed over $1 million. There were a lot of skeptics and some went as far as calling PayPal to check Kim’s figures. Unfortunately, PayPal does not keep up with numbers like that so they decided to ask the source. Well Kim could not actually confirm these numbers:
"No, I actually don't know right now," she told Rap-Up.com about her mixtape sales. "I have a team that kinda checks up on all that. We'll keep you posted."
What do you mean you don’t know? I swear she does anything for attention. Congratulations for proving the skeptics right. Why post that if you don’t know the real numbers. The tweets have since been deleted from Kim’s page. Hmmm…I wonder why.
Kim also had this to say:
"At the end of the day, you're always going to have your haters," she said. "We need the haters. There was actually a representative at PayPal who basically didn't really confirm or deny it, but also [said] that they're very happy and proud of the success of Lil' Kim. I think numbers in other areas speak for themselves. I mean, why aren't they questioning the 'Black Friday' [video] being at 2.5 [million views] in less than 18 hours? Why aren't they questioning that? What's the difference? How can you add up one thing and not the other? I just feel like people pick and choose the area that they want to attack."
Good try attempting to take the attention off your false statement but there is no way anyone is going to just forget about it. I wonder if she knows that PayPal shut down the sales of the mixtape. SMH

Normally I’m all about writing show reviews, but I really feel like this artist needs a spotlight greater than a show review can provide. So, I’m just going to say that his El Paso show at the Republic was great and I’m going to move forward and introduce you all to BobbyBrandNew! Cool? If not, I really don’t care because you know I’m gonna do whatever I wanna do...GOSH! :-p
![]() |
| Photo by Janina Chives |
I was first introduced to him back in November of 2010 when he opened up for J. Cole at The Clubhouse in Tempe, AZ. I’m not even going to lie, when I first saw him walk up on stage, I thought “who is this corny looking dude in these bright ass red jeans?” I might have even whispered that to Mixtape Chic to the right of me. Cue the music (live band) and the bars. My next thought was “oh shit...this dude is nice! You hear him?!” Ha ha. Needless to say, I ate my words and was hooked.
There is something about BobbyBrandNew that allows him to grab the attention of the crowd and make them listen. Not every artist possesses this unique ability. You hear a lot of people talk about good artists and say that their lyrics are genius, but their live delivery needs work. Well, BobbyBrandNew already has it! I witnessed this not only on myself and our crew at the Tempe show, but also in El Paso, TX at the Republic show. Let me explain (my show review portion of this story).

A Mexican-American, born in Los Angeles and raised in El Paso, TX, Robert Delgado currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona. A cool, funny, articulate guy who is serious and passionate about his music. He does not play games. Music over everything for Bobby. He’s professional and has done his homework. You can hear it in his music. Buy his CD, BrandNewEra and it’s written and heard all over it. I recommend “One Day” and “Vison,” two of my favorite tracks. His sound is unique. There’s no comparing him to any other artist out right now.

You think I’m full of shit? Well, see for yourself then. You can catch him this weekend (February 26th) opening up for E-40 at The Clubhouse in Tempe, Arizona. To be honest, I’d go see him and pass on E-40...lol. Continuing on with the plugs:

The wait is over! Big K.R.I.T., Cyhi Da Prynce, Diggy Simmons, Fred The Godson, Kendrick Lamar, Lil B, Lil Twist, Mac Miller, Meek Mill, Yelawolf, and YG made this year's Freshman Class. Any emcees you think should have been on here that weren't? Anyone you think shouldn't be on? I think the list has some good artists represented. We've been following a lot of them on the blog already so congrats to all the fellas. Maybe next year we can get a female in the mix...side eye at Rapsody. :-)

Kanye West-All of the Lights (video)
I don't know what the big deal is with people hatin' on this video. I liked it. Side note: Do you even need a good video if the song itself is already great by itself?

Luck One--More (Video)
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Luck-One has only been on the hip hop scene as a solo artist since 2009. The former Seventh Science group member has released two EPs since his start: Beautiful Music and True Theory Outtakes which is composed of songs that won't be on his new album. He has shared the stage with the likes of some of hip hop's best including, Talib Kweli, The Game, Dead Prez and RZA as well as others. His upcoming album True Theory will be released on March 22nd. He is definitely one to keep in eye on.

Lil Kim-Black Friday (Video)
Lil Kim has finally released the video for 'Black Friday' from her new mixtape, which was released Monday. She released the song last year the day after Thanksgiving, also called Black Friday. The track is supposed to be a response to Nicki Minaj's 'Roman's Revenge.' I am not impressed by any means with this song. She can do so much better than this. Anyway, here is the video for your enjoyment. Man she looks plastic! SMH

Sneak Peek: Air Yeezy 2
The first edition of the Air Yeezy sold out ridiculously fast and now, sneaker heads and fans may get another shot at getting the second edition -- the Air Yeezy 2. The shoe was spotted in Kobe's The Black Mamba short film for Nike Basketball. While there's not a lot of information out yet and the pics are kinda blurry, you can get an idea of what to expect for at least one colorway. Keep you posted as we find out more.

So Live Saturday-J.Cole...and Wale...and Drake...Oh My!
At the House of Blues in Los Angeles. I really dislike when people post videos of in the morning and they don't record until shortly before Drake comes on or they cut it off after Drake is done. J. Cole gets no love for his own song. SMH. Wish I could have made it to this show though. Hatin'!
