Catching Up with Big K.R.I.T.

We should be hearing some new stuff from Big K.R.I.T. as soon as next week, which seems fast considering that I'm still bumping Returnof4Eva. It's called R4: The Prequal and below he talks about it as well as the new album in the works.  Below are also some clips where he discusses musical influences and his journey in the game.  Shout out to D2S for the crisp footage!

Dee-1 Explains BLUE

This week the video for my favorite Dee-1 song (off of I Hope They Hear Me Vol. 2!) is coming out. Check out this VLOG in which Dee-1 explains the motivation behind writing this powerful song. Also, if you still haven't heard the song, or his album, make sure you download it now. The link is right over yonder ----->
under mixtape features.  Trust me...you won't be disappointed!

Here's the letter he wrote about it:

Wale ft Tiara Thomas-The Cloud

Wale demonstrates that you can have a "weed smoking" video without looking dirty and disgusting (side-eye Wiz). Not that I promote smoking weed.  I'm just saying.  This song actually gives me some hope that I may still like Wale's next album.  It's hard to tell sometimes what we're going to get out of Wale since he signed with MMG. Loving Tiara Thomas right now too.  Get it!  Fun video!

Why We Love Dee-1: Ep 4 Lookin Out for HOME!

Who has a show and charges $1 to get in? The answer: Dee-1 of course. Dee-1 gave a treat to his hometown of New Orleans when he performed at Hookah for a buck. I was really contemplating flying out for that one and if I would have had time off from work, I would have been there. However, since we weren't there and still wanted to share a piece of it, we'd like to shout out Reality Bites and Nola Hollywood for providing the world with some video. Dee-1 performs "Ride Wit Me." Peep it!

Jeans on Slim-BobbyBrandNew ft Tabi Bonney

Photo by J. Chives-Blue Cheeze Photography

BobbyBrandNew nonchalantly leaked his hottest song "Jeans on Slim" today on his REVERB page. This is the jam hands down. Those that have been following the budding emcee from Phoenix (and have seen him live) have probably heard this song before. Fans have been feenin' for it and BobbyBrandNew has held on to it until now! You may have remembered our STUDIO SUNDAY segment about the day that this all went down. If not, click the link and get familiar! Tabi Bonney lends a ridiculous flow to this track. The words "you complete me" come to mind in a very non-gay way. The song is just perfect now. Hip Hop ChicZ can't wait to see the video (hint hint Bobby). For now, you can check the song out below and we'll let you know when it makes it's debut on iTunes to purchase. I think Tabi Bonney and BobbyBrandNew fans will be very pleased and to everyone else...make sure you jump on this bandwagon early. :-)  BobbyBrandNew's highly anticipated Now Boarding mixtape is dropping soon!!!  Stay tuned...

What are the Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of 1990-1999?

XXL seems to think they know.  They will be dropping a special issue next Tuesday about one of the greatest eras in hip-hop.  I can't wait to see what they come up with.  Read all about it below:

By Rob Markman, MTV-Many hip-hop enthusiasts consider the 1990s the genre’s best decade. With the music in full maturation, hip-hop expanded outside of New York, blew up in the west, and introduced us to new stars, styles and sounds. To celebrate the ’90s, on May 24 XXL Magazine will release a special one-off issue that ranks the Top 250 Greatest hip-hop songs from “Rap’s Best Decade Ever!”
At the top of the heap is Dr. Dre’s 1992 classic with Snoop Dogg, “Nothin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.” The Chronic lead single, sparked the West Coast’s ’90’s reign and helped mold Dre and Snoop into worldwide superstars.

The artist formerly known as Puff Daddy comes close, but doesn’t get the cigar at the number two spot with his 1997 posse cut all “It’s All About the Benjamins (Remix).”2Pac’s “California Love” (No.7) and Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s “They Reminisce Over You” (No.10) get ranked pretty high, while fan favorites like Ice Cube’s “No Vaseline” (No.58), The Lox’s “Money, Power & Respect” (No.117) and Luke’s “I Wanna Rock” (No.141) get props as well.
East Coast pioneers like Public Enemy, KRS-One, Run-DMC and Eric B. & Rakim are all present. West Coast luminaries like E-40, Too $hort and Ice-T get nods too. Crossover pop hits like MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” (No.115) get ranked right alongside hardcore rap classics like Scarface’s “I Never Seen a Man Die” (No.99).
In the end, the list is sure to be celebrated as well as debated.

Nicki Minaj Schools Students

Nicki Minaj took over Collins Academy High School as "Principal for the Day." The Chicago high school won the Get MotivatED challenge which encouraged students to come to school and get educated. They competed against 24 other schools in this six-week competition. Minaj met with students, gave out three $10,000 scholarships and honored teachers. She also helped teach a freshman English class. Nicki kept it calm, cool and collected as the day went on, letting the students know just how important education is for anyone to succeed in life.

“I am a young, female mogul before I am an artist. As a business woman there isn’t a single day where I don’t use my education or acquire new knowledge to ensure my success,” Nicki told the students. “Regardless of where you are today, with education you can take yourself where you want to be. That’s why I am working with the Get Schooled Foundation. They are finding innovative and exciting ways to bring that message to schools like the Collins Academy.”

I have mixed feelings about this but hey if they'll listen and take what she says to heart, I can't be mad at it...

Jay-Z: "The Tackover"

"The Tackover" is a potrait of Jay-Z made entirely out of thumbtacks, 7,633 to be exact. The artwork was done by Andre Woolery.

Here is how he describes his inspiration for this piece:

"Jay-z is the appropriate figure to break my typical medium of oil paint. After 7,633 thumbtacks, this is what materialized: a piece illustrating the idea that every line unveils a glimpse into who Jay-z is. This collection of lines, like a collection of lyrics, come together to create a clear picture of Shawn Carter, one of the best of all time. Time moves slower in this piece, as if you're watching his genius at work."

"I’m in the hall already, on the wall already
I’m a work of art, I’m a Warhol already
On another level, on another plane already..." ~ Jay-Z

This particular piece is priced at $7,633.00 ($1 per tack used) but most of his other pieces do not cost as much.

Other artists that Andre has portrayed include Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac as well as Michael Jackson and Erykah Badu.

The Wu-Tang Clan is one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time and consisted of RZA, GZA, the late, great Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa. I have never seen a group with that many individuals be so cohesive. Wu-Tang released their first independent single "Protect Ya Neck" in 1993. They had not been signed yet but had an ample amount of fans from the underground music scene and from then on their following grew and grew. Enjoy this classic!!

Eternia-One Love

Eternia: "ONE LOVE" Remix (AUDIO)

Eternia touches a classic in response to Elzhi's "ONE LOVE", off the recently released "Elmatic" Nas Tribute Mixtape.

"ONE LOVE" Eternia Remix (4:24): http://hulkshare.com/i7tjq7qgmw99
"ONE LOVE" Extended Version (5:38): http://eternia.bandcamp.com (w/ Lyrics)
"...didn't keep it, that would be an MTV Special story later... who woulda thought at the time what I'd get into?!..."
Eternia returns with her first audio leak since the critically acclaimed and Juno-nominated album "AT LAST" (Fat Beats Records). Elzhi's "ONE LOVE" - arguably the deepest track on the Nas-inspired 'Elmatic' - tells the tale of a fly, ride-or-die woman that had it rough growing up, but ends up as El's one love. As Eternia explains it,
"I related so much to the person that Elzhi describes in 'One Love'. A lot of her experiences - not all, but many - mirrored my own life."
Just when you think Eternia bared it all on "AT LAST" w/ MoSS, she goes even deeper on "ONE LOVE", providing a woman's perspective to Elzhi's story. But don't sleep... super-lyrical & super-skilled, Eternia holds her own w/ one of Hip Hop's foremost lyricists on a Classic rap record.
One Love.

M-Bone Victim of Drive-By Shooting

E Online! - M-Bone, a So-Cal rapper with the Dougie-happy Cali Swag District, has died after being gunned down in a drive-by shooting late last night.

Police in Inglewood confirm that a man was killed by two gunshots to the head around 10:30 p.m. The victim was sitting in the passenger seat of a car when another vehicle pulled up alongside and unloaded "at least two rounds" into the car, according to Lt. Michael Marshall.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

Was there a motive?

"It looks like they knew each other," says Marshall. "It was not a traditional drive-by." However, investigators don't have any suspects and are asking for tipsters to call in.

Police didn't immediately identify M-Bone (aka Montae Talbert) as the victim, pending notification of next of kin. But TMZ reports that indeed the MC was the one killed.

Formed last year by M-Bone and fellow rappers C-SmooveYung and JayAre, Cali Swag District immediately hit the charts with the huge hit "Teach Me How to Dougie."

Femcee Friday: Dynasty

4

Dynasty is a new hip hop Femcee, not an entertainer. There’s not too much on her right now but I see her going places! Her lyrics hold something we don’t see too often in female artists; she writes her own lyrics, and stays away from the fad of extremes and over indulgence.
Originally from Queens, NY, she now resides in Tampa Bay, FL. Her music resonates that of a striving artist. Dynasty’s mixtape “Dreampusher,” mixed and hosted by DJ Sandman, dropped last June and received welcoming reviews. The title is perfect; she knows what she wants, and coming where she’s from she knows it takes work to get there, thus pushing for a dream. (personally I love it, BOMB) Download it HERE

She’s opened for Wu-Tang, and Little Brother. She also received the Best of The Bay award. Her strides are not going unnoticed. Check out her interview with BootlSlapRap

New leaked song from J. Cole via 2dopeboys. This one is not on the album, but hopefully it will be a lil something to hold over those with Cole Fever. Enjoy!

Reema Major-Ghetto Kids

I just couldn't resist posting this right away. Here is the 15 year old, ill emcee, Reema Major with the first single off of her upcoming mixtape I am Legend. This one is called Ghetto Kids.  Check out the making of the video and the video itself.  Very hype about this young lady!

Elzhi-ELmatic

Elzhi's long awaited (and when I say long awaited, I'm talking years) ode to Nas' Illmatic has finally arrived. It got to the point where people gave up on waiting and put it in the same release date category as  Detox. In other words, they thought it would never come out. Luckily for us, it is ready and already being called classic. Don't expect it to be him spitting over instrumentals like most tributes do. If you heard the previously released tracks then you know that Elzhi took a better route with this. Elzhi did not take this tribute lightly and made it his own. In a way never done before.

Elzhi teamed up with XXL exclusively for the release of the Will Sessions produced ELmatic. Royce Da 5'9 and Pete Rock make appearances on the mixtape. Fans can get limited edition hard copies of the mixtape via elzhi.com.

Why We Love Dee-1: Episode 2

Why do we love Dee-1? Because his interviews are never boring and he brings REAL conversation. Gotta love hearing what he has to say. Check out these interviews. One from his stop in St. Louis on The Grind-N-Hustle Tour, the other from SXSW in Austin, TX and the last from allhiphop.com in NY.

I really enjoy the Cipher ATX group as well. I see ya'll doing your thing! Hip Hop ChicZ will be keeping tabs on you all. :-)
