So Live Saturday: Jean Grae at A3C (Video)

A3C was an experience that will never be forgotten. Luckily, I was able to catch Jean Grae perform while we were there. Jean is one of my favorite performers. She doesn't hold back and says/does whatever she feels. When she wants you to dance clap or sing along, you better do it or she'll call you out as she has done everytime I have seen her. She performed old and new tracks including "Love Thirst" from Jeanius, "Rock On" and "You Don't Like It" as well as others. She even went as far as inviting fellow emcees on the stage to dance with her for her last track. Take a look at some footage we got of her show:

That's Rocawear: L.A.

L.A starts off 2011 with a bang by premiering her first mixtape and mini movie, The Presentation. Influenced by classic albums such as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Kanye West's College Dropout, the tape's setting begins in a classroom and gives the listener a virtual walk through of her learning process as a lyricist.

About That's Rocawear Campaign:
That's Rocawear viral videos celebrate the evolution of hip hop culture. Rocawear was established in 1999 off the excitement around Jay-Z and Rocafella Records and remains today as the number one urban lifestyle brand in the world. We celebrate how the culture has evolved and how Rocawear has not only evolved with the culture but has been a major force in communicating that evolution around the world.

DJ Premier f. Nas & the Berklee Symphony Orchestra - Regeneration

DJ Premier teamed up with Nas and the Berklee Symphony Orchestra as part of the RE:GENERATION project which is presented by Hyundai Veloster. A documentary in association with the Grammys, RE:GENERATION brings together five DJ's from different genres of music and gives you a look at how they re-create their "comfort" genre with a genre they don't usually work with. Take a listen to the track below:

Here is how the track came about:

DJ Premier was given Classical and began his immersion into the genre with Bruce Adolphe, a former classical music professor at Juilliard. They met at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music not far from DJ Premier’s home in NY. After learning about classical music theory, the inspirations of some of the genre’s most profound composers and how traditional pieces are structured, DJ Premier went out and bought tons of classical symphonies on vinyl to mash up his own creation. We then took that mash-up and orchestrated it for sheet music. In the first step of the actual recording process, DJ Premier partnered with Stephen Webber, a professor and conductor at the Berklee College of Music. Steven taught Premier how to conduct and helped him in studio with the 58-piece Berklee Symphony Orchestra you hear on the track. Of all the takes, the one you hear is the “wild” version (which means they recorded it without the metronome in their headphones) DJ Premier conducted himself. Then DJ Premier brought that instrumental track back home to NY and Nas laid down his rhyme on top of it. ~ VIBE.com

RoQ'y TyRaiD-RoQupy Music (audio)

Man...proud to say this emcee resides in our backyard!!! You didn't know music like this could come out of Arizona, did you? I approve this message. Listen to the latest single called "RoQuopy Muisc" music below and spread the message.

In light of recent events, I think it's important more of us artists openly speak out and voice our opinions about the state of our culture.. not "hip-hop" but our society as a whole.  Still, in this New Depression.. we (hip-hop) use escapism like a reality-altering drug by masquerading  the plight of our economy and LACK of jobs with the glorification of materialism in ways not even the "shiny suit era" could rival. Yet, we dare not speak of politics...  ??! Social Awareness is that Taboo?? Most won't even acknowledge our collective, impending demise.. without it being used as a marketing ploy, of course (i.e. all the "recession-themed" songs / albums )...  So, i dug deep into my "The Podium" roots..

Voiced my frustration..

So.. with out further delay..

My Favorite Rapper Wears a Skirt (Look Book)

Eternia performed at the Import/Export stage at A3C. Although we were unable to catch her show, we heard nothing but great things about her performance. Honestly, I wouldn’t expect to hear any different. Luckily, we were able to catch up with her and capture a few photos of her with her new scarf that was a gift from fellow artist Shokanti.

The scarf that is worn by Eternia is referred to as pano di terra, which means piece of land or cloth of the land. Historically associated with Cape Verde, each one was woven on and was used as a way of communicating. Enslaved women would wrap the cloth around their waist for the Batuka which was a way of freestyle dancing. Although the traditional colors used were black and white, these can be made in many different colors (as seen in the pictures).

-Mixtape Chic

The first time I heard Eternia's lyrics and sound, I was an instant fan. Her "MY FAVORITE RAPPER WEARS A SKIRT" movement appealed to me as well. Not too long after we had the opportunity to see this dope emcee from Canada perform live at Paid Dues. Of course, when I meet beautiful, talented artists the first thing that comes to my mind is "I want to shoot them (with a camera) and capture their essence." Luckily, I had that opportunity at the A3C Hip Hop Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. These have been some of my favorite photos I've taken of an artist so far in my photography journey. I just want to thank Eternia again for the opportunity, for making meaningful music, being an awesome individual and for representing hip hop to the fullest. So without further ado....the look book:

J Cole "Cole World Tour" The Filmore from Teck Films on Vimeo.

Audio isn't the best initially, but what can you do with all that bass!!! :-) Great video quality though. Cole opens up with the best verse period of 2010 (in my humble opinion) from "Looking for Trouble." Then he performs "Cole World" which we didn't get to see at his show pre-September 27th. Then he goes into "Before I'm Gone" and "It Won't be Long." The video ends with his live performance of "Lost Ones." Wow! The whole crowd already knows all of the words. Beautiful! This is actually how I envisioned him performing it. Just a few more USA shows and J. Cole and Co. take it overseas.

Why We Love Dee-1: Ep 10 At A3C

Why do we love Dee-1? He's coming back to New Mexico!!! Woot woot. We caught up with Dee-1 at A3C and asked him a couple of questions. He told us about his new music releases (and new project coming out called MISSION VISION), the A3C experience and what will be going down on 11/11/11. Excuse my gum chewing during the interview...it was a spur of the moment thing and I forgot to dispose of it. You know this chic still gets nervous around Dee-1 too. :-p Don't judge me!!!

We expect the southwest to represent and show some love to Dee-1 when he returns to headline The Dark Matter Project. This includes Las Cruces, Sante Fe, Rio Rancho, El Paso/TX, Arizona....we want everyone to come out and support great hip hop!!!  Stay tuned to www.HipHopChicZ.net for all the details and we will see you there!!!

Voli The Entity (Look Book)

I haven't been a fan of Voli very long. In fact, the first song I heard from him was "Autumn Air" and I can't even tell you exactly when and where I got it from, but it ended up on my "Good Music" playlist.  I listened enough to know the words, but I still had no idea who Voli was.  Fast forward to J. Cole's Any Given Sunday #1 and the song "Pity" which was produced by Voli. Of course I loved that song off the jump and Voli's verse definitely stood out, but again, I still didn't really know who he was. Then, I hit up a few sessions of Omen's (Afraid of Heights drops 10/31/11) listening room. He played Voli and talked about him quite a bit. So then I'm thinking, Voli is someone I need to get up on. Then in September, Voli dropped In The Meanwhile and it was a done deal. I loved it! Everything about it! So I come to find out a little more about this amazing producer/emcee. His lyrics really speak to EVERYMAN and his musical composition and samples are super creative. Elite's "Gone" is a prime example (and I love INDIAN music!!).  So on to the look book. Much to our excited and hyper surprise, Voli was on the bill for a performance at A3C, so we had to jump on the opportunity. Awesome performer! Super happy that we got to see him live! So you've seen the show photos, you've seen the performance, now we give you the official Hip Hop ChicZ Artist Look Book. Interesting situation doing a photo shoot after a performance in a place crowded with hip hop heads, but I think it turned out pretty cool. Ladies, you might want to take a seat for this one. ;-)

Stay tuned for the interview...coming soon!!!
